Communicating Ecology in Pope Francis' Media Education

Section: Thematic Articles

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to present the communication of ecology in the media education of Pope Francis, where important components are the concept of media education and communication with the natural world, which is a multidimensional process that includes understanding the signals sent to humans by the natural world.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem is to define the Pope’s understanding of media education, as manifested in the culture of encounter, in guiding pedagogy, and in the educational alliance.. The study employs critical discourse analysis, hermeneutic textual analysis and comparative analysis with elements of analysis and synthesis.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The discussion addresses the foundations of media education: the culture of encounter, guiding pedagogy, and the educational alliance. It then examines the Church’s presence in traditional and social media through professional formation, simplicity, and a culture of closeness. Finally, it presents ecological communication in media education through reconciliation with creation, justice in ecological language, and responsibility for the future.

RESEARCH RESULTS: In the Pope’s ecological communication, media education is grounded in a culture of encounter, guiding pedagogy, and educational communication between home, school, and the media. This requires the Church’s active presence in traditional and social media through well-prepared professionals, simplicity, and a culture of closeness, enabling ecological communication based on reconciliation with creation, justice, and responsibility for the future.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: It is necessary to carefully understand the essence of media education and discover what it involves in order to be able to promote ecological communication in everyday life. Education combines the pursuit of wisdom with the ability to acquire knowledge.. Therefore, media literacy is an important determinant of education, as widespread access to media, while having a quantitative dimension, also has a qualitative dimension, introducing simplifications.
