IDENTITY POLITICS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS IN THE LIGHT OF FRANCIS FUKUYAMA’S BOOK „IDENTITY. THE DEMAND FOR DIGNITY AND THE POLITICS OF RESENTMENT”

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article is an attempt to show the consequences, dilemmas that identity politics brings against the background of Francis Fukuyama's considerations contained in his book "Identity. The demand for dignity and the politics of resentment”.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHOD: The article draws attention to two main issues: the sources of identity politics and the consequences resulting from the adoption of identity assumptions.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The author analyses what the very notion of identity means and how Identity politics has become one of the fundamental and key issues today. Secondly, he presents the sources of identity politics, pointing out – as Fukuyama writes – that the desire to be recognized is rooted in our human nature, a particular way of understanding the inner "I", as well as the related tension between this "I" and everything that is external to this "I." Finally, the implications of adopting an identity mindset are analyzed.

RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis of the sources and assumptions of identity politics indicates certain significant dilemmas and threats: the constant demand for recognition, a kind of forgetting about the citizen, and the dismantling of thinking from the perspective of the common good.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Identity politics, in addition to positive changes, also brings significant risks. It is important to acknowledge them and, recognizing the complexity of this issue, discuss them without unnecessary simplification and ideologization.
