RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to analyze Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato si’ in the context of the media’s role in shaping environmental awareness. The study aims to confirm the hypothesis regarding the media’s responsibilities within the social ecosystem and the necessity of education for maintaining ecological balance.
THE RESEARCH AND PROBLEM METHODS: The study utilized desk research, observation of the operation of European and South American media, and a tone analysis. Furthermore, in the process of verifying the hypotheses, elements of the biographical method of analyzing media messages were utilized.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Following the introduction and definition of the teleology of the research, the scientific hypotheses and research methodology were presented. Along with a description of the purpose of media as the promotion of proper attitudes toward the world, including nature, the main hypothesis and four supporting hypotheses were identified. The role of the media and media education in promoting ecological values was defined using the encyclical Laudato si’ as an example, and integral ecology was identified as one of the priorities of educational activities.
RESEARCH RESULTS: An analysis of the document Laudato si’ and the broader context of its creation confirmed the thesis established in earlier studies regarding the growing role of media messages in the context of responsibility for the ecosystem across all continents, and served as the basis for the conclusion that it is necessary to safeguard its homeostasis.
CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The development of universal media education aimed at building competencies that combine technical skills with ecological values and a personalist paradigm will enable the media to serve as a space for dialogue. It is recommended to support international research projects and media initiatives that integrate spiritual and social values with the idea of sustainable development, promoting intergenerational justice and responsibility for the ecosystem.
