Three political myths of Austria-Hungary

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the following paper is to identify and distinguish the basic and most important varieties of the political myth of the former Habsburg monarchy.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem addressed in the paper is the political myth of Austria-Hungary and its internal diversity. The authors use the method of constructing types as the most frequently recurring varieties of myth.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The authors compare the ideas of the most famous proponents of each myth.

RESEARCH RESULTS: As a result of their argument, the authors identify three basic types of the political myth of Austria-Hungary: the romantic (or nostalgic) type, the apologetic type, and the palingenetic (or revival) type.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This preliminary typology of political myths of Austria-Hungary is an innovation previously absent from the literature on the subject. The authors recommend that the proposed typology be discussed in order to formulate better or alternative typologies.
