RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim is to try to show the status of the lie that appears in the political space (political lie). The properties of this variety of lie will be considered on the ground of liberal democracy.
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: For the purposes of the study, an anti-naturalist perspective is adopted, according to which the social world is socially constructed. In such a view, the contextual character of an event such as lying will both constitute its justification and determine its form, function and effectiveness.
THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The analysis will be carried out by showing the contradiction drawn between two perspectives conditioning certain possibilities of perception of reality and action: 1) the disposers of authority/machine organising collective life; and 2) individuals.
RESEARCH RESULTS: Assuming a certain unfavourable course of events, it should be noted that rationality – manifested through an instrumentality of which the state remains the direct disposer – is an apparent, albeit quite effective, antidote to the progressive deconstruction of the integrity of the individual subject in the modern world. It offers the individual generally the illusion of participation and co-determination. Under these conditions, the lie – which remains at the service of authority in a liberal democracy, harnessed to a subtle system of pressure and control – can become a principle of politics, an effective tool of control. The space of lies creates favourable conditions for the process of privatisation of the state.
CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The prerequisite for interrupting the progressive, system-induced rational process leading to capture seems to be that the manipulated individuals regain power over their own will. The way to rescue this integrity may be to gradually acquire the knack of not succumbing to the illusions of political interpretation of the world.
