Political philosophy, zeteticism, and the voice of poetry

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific objective of the article is to reinterpret political philosophy based on the distinctions made by M. Oakeshott, especially the opposition between the politics of faith and the politics of scepticism, and to reveal their limitations. On this basis, I propose my own approach to political philosophy, developing these distinctions through the concepts of zeteticism, criticism, and the “voice of poetry,” which deepen the conversation about the political.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In the article I primarily use text analysis as the primary research method. Additionally, I include meta-philosophical considerations related to political philosophy.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: I utilize the opposition I have developed between explicitly stated unfetterness and fetterned understatement. To clarify the relationship between them, I refer to selected views of political philosophers, with particular emphasis on the remarks of M. Oakeshott, whose perspectives will serve as a starting point and a pretext for revealing my proposal. Specifically, I will attempt to break through the two polar ideal types—politics of faith and politics of scepticism (in the spirit of Oakeshott)—with a revitalizing and positive zeteticism. Instead of the project of monomythic dominance, I will propose not a formally defined “conversation of mankind,” but rather a multidimensionally framed criticism, with a special emphasis on sensitivity of poetic origin as an attunement to rudimentary distinctions and fundamental differentiations.

RESEARCH RESULTS: For Oakeshott, philosophy is merely a metanalysis of modalities, which means it primarily amounts to critical and parasitic activity. Thus, philosophy contributes nothing to the conversation of humanity. I present a series of arguments against this view. Philosophical activity, expressed as a combination of criticism, zeteticism, and the voice of poetry, alters the boundaries, conditions, and ultimately, perhaps even the content of the conversation. Philosophy examines, shapes, and deepens the capacity for conversation and the ability to function in other worlds with their diverse and ambiguous voices.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In light of the research, a space opens up to move beyond the conventional frameworks of thinking about political philosophy. More importantly, I will expand the discourse on the concept of the political by introducing new areas (previously less explored) and will also connect philosophy with a criticality understood positively and affirmatively.
