Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Theoretical-cognitive objective is to study evolution of approaches to economic-social inequality in economic thought. Analytical objective is to examine economic-social inequality in the European Union (EU) and to recognize the EU’s position on inequalities.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Economic and social inequality in economic theory and its practical dimension on the example of the EU constitutes the research problem. In the course of the research, the following methods were used: literature study, logical analysis and construction, multidimensional comparative analysis.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The line of reasoning consists of 3 main elements: 1. theoretical study of inequality on the ground of modern economic thought; 2. study of the EU stance on inequality; 3. quantitative study of inequality in the EU.

RESEARCH RESULTS: Economic-social inequality is at the center of social sciences interests, in that economics. Economic theory explains causes of inequality and indicates tools for its reduction. The EU faces the problem of inequality. The EU adapts measures to reduce inequality to internal and external conditions.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Economic theory evolves and determines tools for combating inequality. Inequality in the EU results from disparities in income, health, employment, public finance. Instability in the global economy affects inequality in the EU and forces the EU to undertake new initiatives.
