Foundations of Discussions on Religion and Politics: The Perspective of Catholic Media and Platform Users

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article investigates user engagement in discussions on religious and political issues, focusing on the cognitive foundations revealed in these discussions. Additionally, it aims to identify the types of media and platforms used and their characteristics of addressing political and religious issues.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem centers on the characteristics of media users who discuss religion and politics and the cognitive foundations evident in these discussions. This study employs discourse analysis of 30 in-depth interviews and 30 digital media diaries from a selected research group. Recruitment targeted diverse regions of Poland and various categories of believing Catholics to ensure a rich, varied dataset. Discourse theory guided the analysis, supported by a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis tool.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The discussion unfolds through several key issues. Initially, the theoretical foundation and a literature review are presented. The research methodology is then detailed, including participant recruitment, selection, and data collection and analysis methods. The research findings are subsequently presented and interpreted in light of existing literature.

RESEARCH RESULTS: The findings encompass types of media and platform usage and how different user types address religious and political themes. Results highlight the diversity in engagement methods and cognitive foundations among various groups. Specific patterns of media consumption and discussion practices are linked to distinct user types.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The analysis reveals that religious users of media and platforms exhibit varying degrees of reflectiveness, influencing their media consumption and worldview formation. The study recommends heightened awareness of algorithmic influences to reduce oversimplifications and encourage critical thinking. This approach could mitigate the impact of media algorithms on opinion shaping and promote a more nuanced public discourse.
