Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the article is to present the image of the political elite, as shaped by members of the elite, which can potentially reach the public, with an important role of the media in the process.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The following questions have been asked: is the image of the political elite being created positive or negative; does it depict one political elite; what is the role of the media in the creation of the image of the elite; do statements about the political elite fit into some political phenomena? The method of document analysis and analysis of the literature on the subject were used as the main methods.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Terminological problems and the image of political elites presented to the public in the Polish Sejm of the 8th and 9th terms have been presented and then this have been critically analysed.

RESEARCH RESULTS: The research hypothesis regarding the intensification of anti-elite rhetoric over time has been confirmed. The image of political elites in Polish Parliament is diverse. The elites of a political adversary are evil, egoistic and only care about their own interest, while the elites of the current establishment are those genuine elites which deserve to be leaders. Statements on political elites form part of the ideology of populism. The message on political elites addressed to the public has the more effective potential to reach the public the more often and more strongly it is reinforced by the media.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The issue of political elites will continue to be present in the political discourse. The division between the “genuine” elite represented by the current government and the “bad” one personified by the political opponent is too convenient a means of political polarization to be abandoned.
