Moral intuitions of people with different economic views and their importance in the polish ideological divide

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Analysis of the relationship between moral intuitions and economic views of Poles, and verification of a relationship between self-declaration of political orientation and its standardized measurement. Research was limited only to economic political orientation identified as a research gap in the literature.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem addressed the issue of differences between leftist and rightist economic views in terms of moral intuitions related to different moral foundations, and how respondents understand left- and right-wing political orientation. The study was correlational. The survey involved 328 people recruited in a volunteer-based selection. To measure the variables used The Moral Codes Questionnaire (MFQ-PL) and the Political Beliefs Questionnaire.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Formulated hypothesis: Individuals with right-wing economic views experience weaker intuitions related to the foundations of concern and justice when making moral judgments than those with left-wing views (H1). The terms “right-wing” and “left-wing” relate more to morality than economics in self-declarations of Poles’ political orientation (H2). Appropriate statistical tests were used to verify the hypotheses.

RESEARCH RESULTS: The results obtained confirmed both hypotheses. A possible explanation for the first is to refer to the relationship between economic rightness and social dominance orientation. In the case of the foundation of concern, the differences may be due to social dominance. Regarding the foundation of justice, to the way this variable was operationalized. In the case of the second hypothesis, the specifics of Poland’s social transformation should be considered.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Asking about the political views of Poles we will get an answer that informs more about moral views than economic orientation. Probably male respondents may be an exception. Further research should include experiment or longitudinal design study, analyse sociodemographic variables as moderators, be representative, and better capture the semantics of the terms “left” and “right”.
