The army as a source of many systemic and methodological solutions in quality management

Section: Articles Varia

Abstract

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyse key contemporary quality management systems and methods derived from the military.

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Main research problem: Have procedures, guidelines, and standards derived from the military impacted the direction of development of systems and methods in quality management, and if so, how? The method used was a review of normative sources, specifications, and guidelines, a critical analysis of the literature on the subject, and a method of synthesis and logical inference.

THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The relevance of military quality standards and their impact on the development of contemporary quality management systems and methods in the business sphere is presented.

RESEARCH RESULTS: The historical and contemporary links between quality management and the military were confirmed. Quality management systems, related systems, and methods derived from the military were presented. Attention was paid to the ISO 9000 series and related standards, the AQAP standards, the FMEA method, and its modifications, applied to the food industry.

CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Military inspiration in the form of standards extends to different areas of operation, industries, and actors. An example is the food industry, which benefits from operating patterns developed from systems and methods. Approaches derived from the military allow organisations to develop and defend themselves in an uncertain environment, to better read and fulfil customer needs, and to influence the construction of a guaranteed supply chain. Addressing the topic can be considered an original, innovative contribution to management and quality science and beyond. Many successful solutions, e.g., systemic, from the military sphere have not yet been popularised, which means that there is a rich arsenal of approaches that can be used in the future for quality management in the business sphere.
